There's a whole lot of learning going on here in our classroom! Decimal conversions, themes in literature, argumentative writing, U.S. landforms, and even the laws of gravity!
We are also learning about learning.
We discuss how to be an effective learner, and how to take responsibility for our learning. We ask questions, make predictions, and formulate arguments. We explain our reasoning using clear and precise language. We are beginning to realize that learners have misconceptions, and it is important to listen carefully, examine evidence, and revise our thinking when presented with new or conflicting information.
Awhile back we watched two videos that led to deep thinking and eye-opening discussions about our role as learners. Our discoveries continue to impact our thinking and learning everyday in our classroom.
The "Broken Escalator" video reminds us to look at a problem carefully and recognize when we have the inner resources to solve on our own. We ask, "How can we get ourselves off the escalator?" We take pride in our independence as we "find our way" unaided.

Of course we are often presented with complex problems and tasks that require collaboration and support. "Austin's Butterfly" reminds us of the importance of perseverance, feedback, and revision. We critique our work and ask, "Where does this fall on the 'Butterfly Scale?'" We think about how we can make improvements and ask for suggestions. When beginning a new task or project, we discuss audience and purpose. We think about where the work should fall on the scale, and what it will take to get there.
Learning is a life-long process. Our passion for learning is
what drives us. It's important to understand what learning entails and how we learn best. Learning is hard work, but it is so worth it!
